GTRCMC-EA, led by Advisory Council member, Prof Jaume Guia, is exploring blue economy opportunities in Eastern Africa.
The team visited The world’s first 100% recycled plastic sailing boat, in Lamu.
The boat, aimed at providing a solution to the plastics menace, was launched in September 2018.
Waste plastics, mainly from Lamu’s beaches, were used to construct the entire boat. The keel, ribs and structural elements are all made from recycled plastic including bottles and bags, whilst the hull and decking is covered completely by re-purposed flipflops. The vessel was constructed by local craftsmen using traditional methods.
In 2021, the team began building another 23 metre long, 60 tonne sailing boat constructed entirely from plastic waste collected along the Kenyan coast, and covered in 285,000 flipflops, that will sail across the world.
