Enhancing Tourism Resilience: Addressing Security Challenges in an Evolving Landscape – Lamu County

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife organized a workshop on “Tourism Sector Safety, Communication, Crisis Management, and Capacity Building.” The workshop was held on November 29, 2024, at the Majlis Resort in Lamu County during the Lamu Cultural Festival, which was held from  November 28 to December 2, 2024.

Global Tourism, Resilience and Crisis Management Centre-Eastern Africa (GTRCMC-EA) was represented by Dr. Heather Kipchumba a Senior Researcher at the Centre and Lecturer at Kenyatta University, who presented on the role of the Centre in ‘Enhancing Tourism Resilience; Addressing Security Challenges in an Evolving Landscape – Lamu County’.

The key points noted were:

Ø  Embracing technology through geo-mapping to reduce zoning effects on the entire county.

Ø  Media leverage to attain credible reporting, a collaboration of all stakeholders in the county.

Ø  Intensive sector, and rank specific training

Ø  Resolution of root causes of insecurities

Ø  Upholding cultural festivals

Ø  Change of Lamu County narratives

Ø  Improvement of capital infrastructure

Ø  Intensifying efforts to counter alcohol and Drug abuse, among others.
